From the Retek utca clinic, Millenáris park is 6 to 7 minutes and Városmajor 8 minutes on foot, and the Buda Hills are a bus or Cogwheel Railway ride from Széll Kálmán tér. We measured distances along walking routes from OpenStreetMap data in October 2026.
According to the WHO, regular physical activity benefits every age group, and a little activity is better than none. What suits you, and how much, depends on your condition; this article is about places, not a training plan.
Where can you walk nearby?
- Millenáris and Széllkapu park: about 500 metres, 6-7 minutes on foot. A park on the former Ganz factory site, with lawns, paths and a playground.
- Városmajor: about 640 metres, 8 minutes. A shady, flat park with an open-air stage and a playground; good for beginner walkers and runners.
- Széna tér memorial park: about 430 metres, 6 minutes, on the other side of Széll Kálmán tér.
Flat parks are a good choice if your knee, hip or lower back is still sensitive and you want to build up load at a steady pace.
Walking is the simplest form of exercise: the US Department of Health and Human Services’ guidelines give brisk walking as an example of the 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity activity recommended each week, and Hungarian Central Statistical Office data from 2019 show that 87 percent of people in Hungary regularly get around on foot.
How do you get out to the Buda Hills?
- Cogwheel Railway (line 60): the Városmajor terminus is about 830 metres, an 11-minute walk. The line climbs Széchenyi-hegy and accepts BKK passes and tickets.
- Normafa: bus 221 from Széll Kálmán tér; the planner gives about 37 minutes including walking.
- Kis-Sváb-hegy and Rókus-hegy: 20-23 minutes on foot from the clinic, both steep with stepped sections.
How far is Margaret Island?
The southern tip of the island is about 2.4 kilometres on foot (33 minutes), or roughly a quarter of an hour by bike. By tram, take the 4 or 6 to Jászai Mari tér and walk across the bridge: about 19 minutes in all. Many people find the island’s soft-surfaced running track easier on the joints than asphalt.
Which sports venues are a few minutes’ walk away?
| Venue | Walking distance |

| Gravity Boulder Bar (climbing) | about 230 m, 3 min |
| Budai Tenisz Centrum | about 510 m, 7 min |
| MTK Buda sports halls | about 520-570 m, 7-8 min |
| Marczibányi tér Sports Centre | about 630 m, 8 min |
| Hegyvidéki Sport Uszoda (swimming pool) | about 750 m, 10 min |
Check opening hours and prices on their own websites; we have not verified them, and the clinic has no connection with any of them.
What should you watch for if you start hiking after treatment?
Hill paths load the knee and ankle differently from a flat pavement: for many people the downhill stretch is harder than the climb. Start in a flat park, increase the distance gradually, and only then pick a route with hills. If you are coming back to sport after an injury or a complaint, or a movement regularly causes pain, it is worth having a professional check you first. The NHS describes how a physiotherapist assesses your movement and tailors advice to it.
What happens at such a session is described in the first visit article. Getting back to sport is covered in this article, and staying active after treatment in this one. Drivers can read about parking here, and about the shops and market nearby here.
The walks, parks and climbs around the Pasarét clinic are covered in this article.
